SMHS World Languages Department

"The World Languages Department at San Marcos High School offers students the opportunity to learn how to speak, read, write and understand Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, American Sign Language and French.  Our teachers  enrich the language study with cultural activities, which is part of the California State Content Standards. 

For the 2010-2011school year, we offer

• Spanish levels 1- 4AP Language along with Spanish Literature AP. 
• Native Speakers - SMHS also has a comprehensive program for native speakers of Spanish, levels 1-3. 
• Students may also choose to study French, in levels 1-3.  French 4AP is offered when there are enough students to fill the course.
• Mandarin Chinese - trough a grant SMHS offer Mandarin.  Students are able to study in levels 1-2.
• American Sign Language - ASL, our newest language, is progressing from level 1 and soon will have a comprehensive program.

SMHS is working to expand its second language offerings.

Many SMHS students elect to study one language for several years, then start their study of a second world language.  We encourgae language exploration and promote cultural awareness through our study programs.
